University of Melbourne makes play for top talent

By Loughlin Shannon

The University of Melbourne has moved quickly to snap up Victoria’s top students, offering significant scholarships to students with ATARs of 99.9 or above.

Scholarship recipient Jocelyn Wang, who attended University High School, said she thought it was her school on the phone. “But then I heard ‘scholarship’ and my jaw just dropped,” she said.

Jocelyn quickly made a friend with fellow recipient Chrislyn Kanagarajah.

“We both want to study biomedicine and then, for me, I want to go into a Doctor of Medicine course,” said Kanagarajah, a Haileybury Girls College graduate.

Other recipients include Melbourne High School classmates Anish Narayan and Uday Parmar.
“We’ve known each other since year 9,” said Narayan, who added “being with your friends and staying open” was the key to getting through high school.

“I found it very helpful to be able to communicate with our friends,” Parmar said.

Tertiary studies will see some move far away from friends and family, including Kardinia International College student Jesse McDougall.

“It is a move to the big smoke,” said the Geelong-based student. “It’ll be great to meet some new people, learn about the city and all the opportunities here.”

All Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholars get guaranteed entry into the program of their choice — with no HECS debt — and an allowance of at least $5000 a year.
